I’m back from a couple of weeks of adventuring that has prevented me from writing this “weekly” blog.  Blogs about those adventures are forthcoming.  For now, there is one gigantic nature related story that I want to discuss.

Earlier in the week, you can read about the announcement here, the Trump administration gave the green light to the importation of elephant parts harvested via trophy hunting in Zimbabwe and Zambia.  After massive pressure from pretty much every conceivable source, Trump, in a moment of lucidity, actually put this decision on hold.

Mr. President, I know that you like all of my social media posts and you have previously said that you read my blog each day before you binge on fake news.  I won’t bore you with the sciencey reasons as to why trophy hunting elephants is bad.  I will explain this subject in a format that you can really dig, by explaining it using money.

One voted has a “trophy”, the country that managed this elephant gets a one-time payment, and the potential for this animal to generate future income is over.  Sad.

Waves of happy voters get to enjoy these animals, the country that manages these elephants gets recurring revenue, and the potential for this animal to generate future income is infinite as long as the population is maintained.  Happy.

Oh, and the animals get to live too.  Hey, it is worth mentioning!

Thank you for reading this blog, POTUS.  Now go tell Secretary Zinke to never mention trophy hunting again.  Thanks!
